I want to 2nd John's solution.  I use a Treo as well and it works
flawlessly.  I have the mocha emulator and the mergic VPN and can control
our systems from anywhere.  The only minus is the size of the screen.
I have also used some PPC phones that also do a decent job as well.  
I am not sure a Treo is any less durable than the original Palm Pilot.  A
bulldozer will destroy anything!
