We had a similar problem with a file, which we estimated that it will take six
days to reorg the file.

There are a number of products on the market to aid the reorg process.
Some require that you have the you have the equivalent free space available or
higher as the file that is being reorganised. It essentially creates a copy of
file being reorganised. (SoftLandings PDQ)

Others reorgnise the file while its active. We tried to do this with a product
from iTera. We didn't have the free space available to try the option above. It
ran for about 7 days and fell over for some reason. (iTera Reorganise While
Active).

The products may have moved on since we had a look.

I would recommend that you test whatever solution before using it on live data.

We never did get the file reorganised.

However we have just installed a 570 with V5R3 and would hope to reorg the file
in the coming weeks using the V5R3 command.

Hope this is of some use.

And _please_ do that, do NOT do what the IBM examples all do and write your
select statements like "select ItemNo, Description from library.item"

You'll have one hell of a fun time when you have to use "testlib.item" for
testing and "prodlib.item" for production, and "mylib.item" for development.
All the external interfaces to SQL (JDBC, ODBC, OLEDB,
.NET) allow you to tell SQL to use the system naming convention in the
connection string.

subject: Re-organising a LARGE file

We have a file with 387,961,653 records and 472,603,144 deleted records. It
has 3 logical files built over it. Using the RGZPFM command we estimate 90+
hours to re-org.

I believe that there are utilities that do a re-org whilst the file is in use.
Does anyone have any recommendations? We're at 5.1 of OS400, there may be an
OS400 utility at 5.3, but we're not going there for a little while.

Thanks,
Ian

You might want to check the archives for the list as I'm certain this has been
discussed before.

When we've been faced with this problem, we usually copy the file to another
library and then copy it back using MBROPT(*REPLACE).

With such a large file, you'll probably want to do that in a test environment
to determine how long it will actually take.

Hope that helps.

subject: Common Session Handouts

I'm attending Common next week and am wondering if the session presentations
are typically handed out at the sessions? I've found maybe 60% or so of the
ones i'm interested in on the Common website for download, but many of them
still aren't out there. I was considering printing some and taking them with
me, but don't want to spend the time doing it (or carry them around) unless
absolutely necessary! (I'm not planning on lugging a laptop around to the
sessions either...)

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks...

There will be last minute additions, and many of the sessions will also
have handouts in the rooms. There are also printers on site if you need to
print one from the web, but this is a last resort. For sessions that you miss,
look for the handout table in the registration area on Tuesday AM. All the
leftovers get put there in the middle of the night, so new
handouts appear each morning.

from: JOberholtzer@xxxxxxxxxxxx
subject: RE: HMC 4.4 (and above)3

From: Andy McLaughlin of IBM Austin TX.

I believe what is being referred to here is that in the 4.3 release of
the HMC, an enhancement was made to support a Journaled File System (EXT3),
which provides much better file system recovery in the event of a
power loss or crash of the HMC. However, the file system on the HMC only
gets converted to EXT3 if you do a full release install (which requires
the CDs). You can also just install 4.3 as a PTF to an existing HMC at an
earlier release level, but that will only update the code without converting
the filesystem. I believe this improved reliability is why the Tech Support
team is recommending that you do the full install update. There is no such
underlying change going from 4.3 to 4.4, which is why just
applying the PTF is sufficient. I'm sorry that the reasons were not
better explained to you.
You can see this information in the release notes for 4.3 on the HMC
support web site at:
https://techsupport.services.ibm.com/server/hmc/power5/fixes/ptf_v4r31.html

Andy
