generally speaking, the conferences require both COMMON membership (not
free) and conference registration (not free).  check out www.common.org
for all the details.

the technical sessions at common are very good.  if you're new to the
platform, one conference can answer a lot of questions (and, more
importantly, get you asking yourself more of the right kinds of
questions).
