There's absolutely no reason to multi-thread in an interactive job. If you
want that functionality build it in a batch job and talk to the
interactive job using the other rich interprocess communications features
of OS400. Use a data queue or a message queue or a data area.

There are no "interactive" jobs on other systems; only batch jobs. In
windows, your programs are batch jobs. All the interactivity is handled by
windows which communicates with your job through the windows message
queue. Batch jobs on OS400 are equally powered or greater.

If you're going to slam OS400, at least learn what you're talking about.

Re: Hmmmm.....$1 Billion

Unless IBM improves the core OS400, I dont think we will get as good
results from this spending as we could.

The fact that you cant run multiple threads in an interactive job in
os400 tells you there are underlying problems with the system code. as
in bugs. Those "bugs" have remained for a number of releases now so
the worry is that IBM management has decided OS400 is not worth the
expense of a major thread safe rewrite.

Threads are important. Without them you cant implement an event
driven programming model. And the popularity of Visual Basic shows
how productive event driven programming can be.
