I could easily have misunderstood Zvi's question. It didn't occur to me that he 
was asking for a PC program, nor does it seem reasonable that a PC program can 
"...retrieve Computer name / Workgroup from the AS/400" without first being 
connected to the AS/400 and then calling this API perhaps through the 
Distributed Program Call/Remote Command host server or similar means, e.g., OLE 
DB.

Something approximating nbtscan would help in exploring what's on the network. 
Does it identify how the AS/400 is configured?

Normally, if I want to 'discover' stuff about the network, I start with [net 
view /domain] and go from there. I haven't used nbtscan.
