You can make the iSeries act as its own SMTP server using the SMTP and Mail 
Server Framework services.  Our MS Exchange servers require authentication, 
but this only applies when sending email out from those servers, or when 
connecting with a client to receive email.  Using a simple and basic 
configuration of the SMTP service on our iSeries machines, we are able to 
send email messages to the Exchange servers without any trouble.
