The HMC is not the controlling partition.  It's just the device that talks 
to the controlling partition.  (Thank GOD!)  The controlling partition is 
actually the FSP or Flexible Service Processor.
The HMC is to the i5 FSP and the i5 partitions, as Op's Console, or a 5250 
terminal was to the iSeries controlling partition.

Actually, it was not bad, CE did all the work, downtime was about an hour. 
 
They had a manufacture put a bad component on only certain serial numbered 
 
controllers. We just happened to see the note in Iseries news and 
downloaded the 
PTF to check. IBM did call us about it, they new which machines had the 
bad 
cards. 
 
As far as the HMC, its a rack mount Intel server which controls the 
AS400's 
partitions instead of having a controlling partition in the system. It 
nice 
once  you get use to it, they still need a to do a lot of work on it, were 

waiting for  Al's tools to come out for it for the automatic scheduling.
