Here's a further example.

I have 4 processor 570.  3 of the 4 processors are allocated to one LPAR. 
There are 10 virtual processors (whatever those are) allocated to this 
partition.  Now on a WRKSYSACT I see:

Average CPU util . . . . . :    63.4
Maximum CPU util . . . . . :   266.0
Minimum CPU util . . . . . :     2.1
Current processing capacity:     3.00
Number of CPUs . . . . . . :    10
Overall DB CPU util  . . . :    .0

How does one interpret that for the bar graph?

Also, what decisions do you make based on the result of the appearance of 
that bar graph?  For example on our old 840 12-way one of the 12 might not 
have been terribly busy.  1 processor was allocated to a partition that 
didn't do a whole lot.  At times one or two processors spiked.  I 
attributed that to the 'query from hell' and was glad that we didn't allow 
SNMP to spread this out over all CPU's.  Now, you can automatically 
configure a lot of these partitions (forgive my terminology) to share on 
the i5's with V5R3 and your HMC.  Thus if one partition is not terribly 
busy the others can glom on to it.  Haven't seen an area within the HMC to 
give you a nice graph to make tuning decisions on.  Performance is more my 
boss' bailiwick than mine.  I am sure that Al Barsa would be happy to 
discuss whether or not that bar graph is meaningful anymore and how to 
interpret it.  He also sells a package for lpar tuning.

Starting with LPAR, and especially with the i5, those indicator lights 
have went out the window.  I have seen individual jobs appearing with 
500+% of the CPU.  How do you get the bar graph to map to that?

Model 520 hardware






I've just installed my second model 520 in 3 days, another coming up
Tuesday.

For those who have seen one, where is the CPU activity/processor run light
?
We could all tell when the CPU was busy on older systems by looking at the
little green light, how bright was it/how fast was it blinking.  Then we
progressed to the "bar graphs" on the control panel.  As far as I can tell
(and I haven't actually found any documentation on how to USE the control
panel after searching for over 30 minutes in InfoCenter - just
documentation on how to remove/replace one) the model 520 has neither.  If
that's true, then that really SUCKS BIG TIME and IBM should be hit over
the head at Sound Off at COMMON for the lousy design.  If it's just a
hidden feature on the control panel 2-line display that I can't find
because I can't find any documentation, can someone please tell me HOW to
get it to display processor activity?
