Mike:

First, are you simply ending certain subsystems or do you actually go all the 
way to restricted state? Very significant difference between those.

Second, what kind of answer are you looking for? Do you want to know how to 
change the programming of your backups to handle problems? Do you want an 
operator to connect back into the system during backups? (...in restricted 
state??) If an operator connection, do you want a terminal session? a way to 
submit commands? communication with the backup program?

Third, what VRM? V5R3 has a very intriguing restricted state TCP/IP feature 
that _might_ help.
