If your using C to build your application on a PC then forget what I'm
about to suggest, BUT, if you're using C on the iSeries and
unless you REALLY need the power and speed of C, may I suggest REXX. 
It will do much, if not all you want, including character, arrays, is a
great string manipulator, all with great speed and flexibility with no
compiling.   Plus it will port to all IBM platforms I know of.
