I'll at least partially answer my own question.  I found that if I
change the 'Graphic Object Support' radio group from the default of
'Basic' to 'None', then the wordart, lines, checkboxes and so forth will
show up in the overlay.

I still can't figure out why the margin settings don't seem to have a
rhyme or reason.  My document has a 0.5 inch top margin and a 0.56 inch
left margin.  I've tried lots of sample sizes for the 'clip unprintable'
setting in the print driver and I get pretty close if I set the top to
0.5 inch and the left to .18 inch.

Sigh...
