Could be a number of things.

Are you doing a complete save ?

Depending on software, some 3rd party stuff I've seen writes and deletes a
TON of records to certain files and never reorg's them. We had this here a
couple of years ago. I found a file with something like 4 million deleted
records. It had pushed our nightly backup to a second tape. That was on a
8MM tape unit, on V4R2 and a 620. We are now on an 810, V5R2 and a 3581 tape
unit (I LOVE this thing).

In talking about tapes,

Four month ago we were backing up our system on two tapes.  Our operator
father got sick and he went out of town.  When he got back three weeks
later, we now required four tape to back.  What could have happen to the
tape setting.  He said that nothing changed.
