I have done something similar to what you are talking about.
The files I FTP'ed were made on the fly using information like job number as
part of the file name.
You need to keep externalizing the script. I have an RPGLE program create
my CL script file with the appropriate file names.
I don't see why you couldn't change or create the script with the date as
part of the file name you are going to send to with the FTP command.

I hope this helps, feel free to contact me if you need more assistance or
examples.

Subject: Automating a FTP

I have a script file that handles ftp'ing a file from our Iseries to a
3rd party. There is now a request to change the file name when it it
sent. Currently the file is something like this RGCCS00H and we
perform a 'Put RGCCS00H RGCCS00H.txt. Now they would like the file with
the current date in the name something like RGH062104.txt.
I'm not sure if or how I can automate this in my script.
Any ideas?
