If you use the windows server machine DON'T GO WINS !
Even Microsoft doesn't recommend it's use anymore, the way to go is

DNS,

In theory I agree, however a number of things still rely on a WINS
server being around. If you're in an all XP environment and have no 3rd
party software that wants WINS you're ok, but otherwise it's been my
experience that you still need WINS.

BTW, the QNTC subsystem wants a WINS server. And in my case Symantec's
AntiVirus wants a WINS server to discover the network.

Definitely not ! You don't need WINS to get Symantec Antivirus to do that, I do it without WINS
at a customers site with all W2K and WinXP boxes, it does all fine.

What is so BAD about WINS that one would very much like to avoid its use in a network ?
It's simply the fact that WINS uses broadcasts throughout your whole network every so and so
seconds. This produces a "background noise" in your net and wastes bandwith.
There are better ways around, one is DDNS.

Quiquid latine dictum sit altum viditur.
(Whatever is said in Latin seems profound.)

Just my 2 cents,
