A UDFS supports user ASPs, the IFS does not. This is why we are now
starting to use UDFS for our image storage. I recently tried saving
/dev/QASP03/ESS800.UDFS using a BRMS backup list and it saved as individual
objects (and took the same amount of time as the same of /ESSDIR, where the
UDFS is mounted.) I'm not sure why yet as I was expecting it to be saved as
one object. When I find out the answer I will let you know. We are
currently at about 325,000 objects, but expect to end up with 10-12 million
by the time we're through.

subject: Re: UDFS File System on iSeries for IFS Storage

Hello All,

I have a question on the UDFS (User Defined File System) for the AS/400
and iSeries.

Why would I want to use a UDFS as opposed to putting PC files directly
into IFS directories ?

Does it speed up file backup by putting PC files into a simulated disk ASP
and then treating the UDFS object as a single object just like the
Integrated PC Server (FSIOP/IPCS/IXS or whatever it's called today) would.
It's a nice concept, but I need some confirmation on what the advantages
are.

The iSeries documentation on the UDFS and where it's best used are very
sketchy.

>From my initial testing it seems more cumbersome because you have to
create the UDFS and make sure it's mounted before use.

Any input would be appreciated.
