I like the separate box for development. You don't run into oopsies if
someone hardcodes a library or some such animal. License costs can be
significantly lower on a smaller development box. Providing you can do
without things like RPG, SQL development kit, etc on your production
machine. If you just gotta IPL to test a ptf or some such thing it's
easier to get done. Having said that, we'll probably move off of our
development box and on to a LPAR at some future time.

Yes, replication can be expensive, if you are talking about a Mimix like
solution. But the benefits may be there. Don't just gag at the cost. See
if the cost is worth the risk. After all, if they looked at just your
salary and benefits that may look expensive. But if they feel they are
getting their money's worth...

We currently do not have a Mimix tool, but odds are increasing that this
may be a future possibility.

We have three 270's. This is what we are doing with them.
1) 270-23F1: We call it the boss' toy. We test new versions of OS on it
prior to putting them on our development machine. We also test new
versions of Domino, etc.
2) 270-2542: Dedicated Server for Domino. Runs http://www.dekko.com and
our ftp site - that's it. Sits in the DMZ.
3) 270-2454: Dedicated Server for Domino. Domino has it's own version
of Mimix like capabilities built it. It's called clustering. We have
this 2454 as the hot site for all of the Domino that's running on our 840.
We either feel that email and other Domino applications are more
important than ERP and Payroll, (since we have a hotsite for Domino and
not the ERP and Payroll), or the cost of Mimix twas a bit daunting
compared to the built in clustering of Domino. And we test the Domino
clustering on a nightly basis. Backups drop the primaries and everyone
fails over, seamlessly.
(Please don't send offers for other clustering software offlist. The boss
says Mimux or nothing.)
