Just to keep people out of trouble:

a) You CANNOT field install a 5074 or 5094 in a rack. IBM doesn't offer such a feature because the buggers are just too damn heavy. You can as you say order a 5294 and get a pair already racked. Note that for dual line cords you need to order TWO kits (one for each 5094)

b) The 0551 is the rack itself. You do need to order one of those to rack any iSeries. Technically though once you get the rack mount features for the server you have, they will fit in any 19" rack. It is up to YOUR CE to decide if he likes the arrangement or not. This is because he is the one who's life and limb is at risk if the rack is a) too wimpy or b) unstable.

c) for i825's IBM has withdrawn the field install in rack kit since the machine is now CE install. You need to order the bugger in a rack. The rack kit consumes an additional 2U of rack space.

d) for i810's and i270s' you need both the rack feature (0137 I think) as well as a system unit expansion. Again the rack kit consumes 2U of rack space.

e) for i820's you need a band saw to make it thinner. This is not an IBM supported modification nor is it reccomended ;-)

f) Now for Loyd's question. Sure we've piled i810's on top of 5094's. The 5094 tower would probably hold my Dodge Ram and I lift the i810 up there myself with no trouble at all. We route the cables down through that slot in the top of the 5094 back cover. We DO reccomend you add some sort of non-skit pad to keep the i810 from being pushed off by accident. Since there is no reason to remove the top of 5094s (like there was with 6xx and 7xx systems) the IBM CE's in our neighborhood have just siad "Cool. Easy to work on!"

IAnother option is to rack the systems. I just racked two 810s and two 825s. 825s on bottom, 810s on top. There is a feature (0550 or0551 I think) for racking these systems. The 5079 is just two 5074s in the same rack. I don't know if IBM will install the 5074 in a rack in the field. Our CE wasn't even aware that IBM offered the racks, even thoiugh they are now CE install only.
