Save files used to download and install PTF's

Morning all.
 
The Systems Manager and I are in dis-agreement on whether or not a save file
used to download & install PTF's needs to remain on the system once the
PTF's have been applied.   
 
I say the save files are NOT needed - the systems manager says that the save
files ARE needed. Can someone please give me the definitive answer.
