I switched to REXX a few years ago to have access to this kind of
functionality. It was easy to learn, very similar to CL, but much more
powerful. I really like what can be done with string manipulation in
it.

Hard ta-tell. Likely "throwing the dogs a bone", or a "fop".
Nevertheless, I'm looking forward to the article and Part 2, that's a
fer-sure!! (As well as 530.)

I guess I've had better luck with CL knowledge in shops, but have heard
stories. Not sure how or why you would NOT want a huge expertise in CL,
in any shop.

| I've done bucket loads of CL programming over the years, and had to
| reproduce this kind of function with IFs and GOTOs.
|
| I wish I'd had these new commands years ago, life would have been so
| much easier.
|
| What I don't understand, is why the new functionality? or why now.
| The emphasis from IBM over the last few years has been to usher us
| away from RPG and CL and toward java and stuff. I'm sure these new
| functions will be welcomed by some developers, but I can't believe
| that too many people are programming in CL any more. Wherever I go in

| my job, knowledge of CL (and even OS/400) tends to be low to
| non-existent.
