Subject: RE: tn3270e client on the AS400

There are some iSeries old hands that would not think to look for the
industry standard commands like: TELNET, FTP, PING, TRACEROUTE. They
would think they need to follow the traditional naming conventions of
either verb-noun or verb-adjective-noun. So IBM duplicated a number of
these commands, like: STRTCPTELN, STRTCPFTP, VFYTCPCNN, TRCTCPRTE.
Functionally, they are the same. Now, figuring out which verb IBM used
for the command can be a trick. That's why I stick to the standard
commands, that, and so I don't get lost when working on other platforms.

Does anybody know the difference between telnet and strtcpteln?
I've been using both and I don't see any functionality difference is that
correct?

The AS/400 TELNET command is the all-purpose command to connect to a
Telnet host as a 3270, 5250, or VTxxx terminal. Our green-screen users
connect to two different mainframes and another AS/400 with the same
command: telnet 'ipaddress'
