It's the printer. The BOX keyword is supported only on Infoprint 60, 62, 2000, 3000, and 4000 models and only when *AFPDS is specified for the printer file AND PSF400 is installed. The 2085/2105 printers do not have the firmware to understand the keyword.

You probably are using host print transform with your Optra and it's converting the AFP page to a PCL document. That's fine for low-volume applications but it reduces throughput to have to send a PCL graphic document to the printer for every page. One of the features of AFP is that the graphic resources are only downloaded for the first page and then remain resident in printer memory for the remainder of the job (or optionally longer).

I'm curious, is this the IPDS firmware or printer? I have been using BOX for some time with IBM IPDS card on an old IBM Optra. jim

Thanks for the reply, Mike. I've done a bit more digging and have
concluded also that a form definition will be needed. We don't have the
AFP utilities, but I do have the InfoPrint Designer product.

There are some predefined form definitions for stapling and stitching
already on the system, but none apparently for hole punch. It would be
a real convenience if IBM would add a few ready-made ones to accomplish
this simple task. Or even add a DDS keyword.

I've also found that the printers do not support the DDS BOX command
because the printer firmware was not programmed to do so. Only the
Infoprint models enumerated in the DDS manual support it. Go figger!

Wayne,

It's my understanding that this get's more into the form definition and

may

require some more advanced AFP functionality that you don't get through

an

IPDS keyword. So a tool like AFP utilities or InfoPrint Designer may

let

you do that more easily. I just started looking at it today for use

with

our 2085. Hopefully I will have some more information in the next few
days.

I'm at a loss to figure out how to ccontrol the hole punch in our new printer. There doesn't seem to be any DDS keyword and there is no place to specify it on the printer file. Anyone have any suggestions?
