NOT NECESSARILY!

The DB9 on the back panel of an APC UPS is some sort of serial port, while
the corresponding connector on the back of an AS/400 is expecting switch
closures on four separate signal lines. For APC, you need an adapter
cable, that has its two end connectors clearly marked as to what they
should be plugged into.

Why IBM didn't simply use something like a 6-pin DIN connector for a UPS
monitoring connector, in order to avoid having hapless users unwittingly
ruin equipment by plugging incompatible pinouts directly into each outher,
I dunno. (sort of like how the elephant got into Groucho's pajamas, I
suppose).

Does anybody have any insights into my own UPS issue?
