Well, you'd first want to focus on each platform's long-term strategy
and viability.  The last thing you want is to be the guy who selected
the HP3000 as the future of the company.

But that aside, your next bet is to identify the areas where the
platforms differ significantly.  According to Gartner, this tends to be
in clustering and disaster tolerance/recovery.  Sun receives very low
marks in both those categories.  It also tends to do poorly in server
management categories.  Finally, support and corporate viability are
lacking.

In fact, the only place Sun wins right now is "Market Momentum", which
is purely a matter of IBM not spending any money on getting mindshare
for the iSeries.  If IBM marketed the iSeries the way they do the p- and
x- boxes, the iSeries would be the hands down winner, especially for
SMBs.
