Simon, See John Earl's early reply about the exit point/program.  My
suggestion would be that writing a program that constantly monitors the
data queue sounds like exactly what you want to do.  If you are
concerned about the overhead of such a program, don't be.  The QRCVDTAQ
API with a wait time set to infinite (parameter value of zero, IIRC)
will sit on the data queue until an entry comes in, using practically no
CPU or memory.

Your other suggestions look so complex that they could quickly become
unmanageable.
