Rob,
A SAVF is a special kind of file that is the container for the output of the
SAVOBJ or SAVLIB command.

Basically, the only difference between a save file and a SAVOBJ or SAVLIB on
a tape is the media used to store it.  The former exists on the system's
auxiliary storage (disk), while the latter exists on a tape.

Some applications may save certain or all files to a save file before
processing to give a faster way of recovering in the event of having to
re-run the process if it crashes.  This can be much faster than saving
to/restoring from a tape.
