RPG36 programs won't deal with externally described files or with logical
files.

You will want to convert the program(s) to RPG. This is quite simple and
straight forward. RPG36 supports a few keywords that are not supported in
RPG, but unless your programs use WSU you will not have a major problem with
the conversion to RPG. Just change the program type from RPG36 to RPG and
try to compile. There will be a few lines to fix, but surprisingly few, and
after you have done a few programs you'll be fixing the programs even before
you try compiling. Once the programs are converted to RPG then the hard work
starts.

So far as creating the externally described files is concerned, I have not
seen a useful tool that works across QS36F, but I have found that most
applications have some kind of a documentation schema, and using that schema
provides most of what you need. Converting to externally described files is
not simple and straight forward. You mayl want to be thinking about your
logical files too. You haven't even begun to deal with converting the OCL
yet.

Subject: RPG36 using externally described files

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone could throw some light on how to use externally
described files in S36 mode on AS400, with RPG36 programs?

I have a tool that converts F&I spec to DDS, but it looks at only a single
program and does not get the aggregate picture of the file from all the
RPG36 programs that use this file. Is there a tool that looks at n RPG36
programs and creates DDS based on the aggregate fields used?

Thanks,
Vikas.
