      Have you tried ADO lately? Ever compare the data retrieval throughput
to an SQL Server?

Ken, I apologize in advance, but these kinds of statements just tick me
off no end, and I have to respond.

I have yet to see you actually try to fix the issue at hand with the
suggestions given.  Instead, because the machine isn't acting exactly
how you want it to, you immediately start saying it "doesn't play well
with others" and "you can['t] get the data off the disk".

Why don't you try some of the suggestions, and then let us know if that
fixes your problem, especially since you've gotten multiple responses
indicating that your environment is at fault, not the machine.  Prior to
actually trying a fix, how about laying off the broad generalizations?
