You could tell them what these are in EBCDIC (hex value). Spooled files are actually stored in files in library QSPL. I looked at one of the members and did see these control characters. But no one needs (or should) be manipulating these things manually.

FF -- 0C
CR -- 0D
NL -- 15
LF -- 25

If this doesn't give you enough info, tell us more.
