Somebody may have beaten me to the punch, and with a lot more functionality,
but for its not cheap: http://www.linus.no/jdbcproxy.html.  This is a JDBC
Proxy which includes a type 3 client that talks to a server on another
machine.  Theoretically this could be a Wintel box with a JDBC/ODBC bridge.

I'm not sure if it will do what I suggest, but if does, it potentially
offers universal connectivity for 3500 euros and might be worth checking
into.
