Nope, not Zone Alarm.  My issue was with my share.  I set a share to
read-only and then forgot I did it.  (Joe's Law of Change Management: Never
make system changes after midnight, and if you do, leave notes for the
morning shift.)  Simple, as these things usually are.  I just didn't see it,
even though I looked at the share several times using OpsNav.  I'm still not
clear as to how I got some of the symptoms I got, but since everything is
working (and working as expected) now, I'm loathe to do a lot of playing
around.
