This should read "with class designations".  What I was trying to say was
that, rather than formatting information, the data is output with only a
"class" designator.  It is then up to the style sheet to render the data
appropriately.

This sort of technique, sometimes called data-centric, is also the premise
behind XML communications.  This is not surprising, since both XML and HTML
are subsets of the more generic SGML standard.  And in fact, XHTML exists as
a sort of hybrid between the two (although at times it is at best an uneasy
alliance).

Anyway, just clarifying my own misstatement.
