Well, my first foray down this road was disappointing.  For a LF to select on 
a field the field must be in the LF format - otherwise it won't compile.  
OPNQRYF does not have this restriction. (see the original OPNQRYF example)

What I'm trying now is to create the LF with all of the fields from the first 
file, then any fields from any secondary files that are needed, but create 
the LF with LVLCHK(*NO) to see if the existing program will read it properly.

If SQL would allow an INDEX over a VIEW I would be just fine.  Oh, well.
