I figured that Al would have taken the opportunity to plug his commercial
solution by now...

If you have TAATOOL, the BLDQRYSLT command works great for creating the
query selection expression for OPNQRYF.  It puts the quotes in the right
places.  All you have to do is substitute the return variable from BLDQRYSLT
in the QRYSLT parm for OPNQRYF.
