I'm just trying to understand...

If COMMON doesn't pay speakers, and COMMON doesn't pay for floor space, and
COMMON gets $1500 a head and say 2000 people attend, then where does the
$3,000,000 go? Equipnment rental? Printing costs? Advertising?

Cleary Janet can do a better job, but here is a 'blast through the dollars': COMMON does not pay it's speakers (except the keynote) but it does compensate them. The detail isn't important here but each session as a primary speaker earns points towards registration and eventually Hotel. Many volunteer positions are also compensated in a manner similair to above. Obviously there is significant staff cost throughout the year. There is a humoungous amount of printing done for a conference and that costs money. Costs for the conference itself ARE significant. Often the conference is held in a conference center and those rooms must be paid for (potentialy compensated in some way by the hotels but that will vary by venue.) A video projection unit for every room and mics for every room and all the computers in the Labs must be rented for the week. Much of the setup is Union labor and everthing used gets paid for ("You want outlets with that table?") Also a bunchfull of internet access is needed and a lot of stuff gets shipped there and back. The banquet costs a bunch too (in fact too much to stomach in Orlando which is why there won't be one there) CUDS desite the $1 a drink is also a cost center. I'm sure I missed a bunch of things but this should give you an idea that $3M is quite easily spent.
