Like others here, my 170 is plugged into a switch (in my case, a D-Link
unmanaged box) without a problem.

One caveat: When I set it up, I wanted to force the AS/400 to run in 100
MBPS, full duplex mode, and tried setting the Ethernet line that way. It
didn't work: it went into half duplex mode. When I set it to do
autonegotiation, everything was fine. Perhaps this is the source of your
"plug it into a hub" issue: either the switch you were using wasn't
negotiating properly, or else the AS/400 wasn't doing the Right Thing?
