I admit that there is a ton load of details missing here, and I wasn't
trying to minimize the amount of work that
        they're obviously looking at.
My point here was, that for all intents and purposes, this application
, if done by a skilled web technician,
and the appropriate software and hardware, will most likely be done a
hell of a lot cheaper than an AS400 solution.
Remember, (albeit complex), this is a one application system.

I'm discounting the business and accounting application software
needed in the back end.
If the client, has no accounting/business software behind the store
front application, then I would agree, that
investigating an AS400 solution may be in order.

Ken

they're rolling.
There's a ton of things missing here.
where is the redundancy (a 5,000 server ain't staying up 7x24x365-backups,
updates, weekly MS security patches.) with this kind of volume an outage
could put them out of business (and your off the shelf store software
may/may not handle multiple server instances with fail-over).
where's the network infrastructure - T1, routers, FIREWALL, etc. (with
redundancy)
Store software - Rob mentioned affiliate program and on-line service....
How does all this tie into their existing system (last time I spec's one of
these with a so-called "web designer" he said he would
send the orders out of the web server via email!! I asked about a direct
update to my DB2 (iSeries) and I got a blank stare...)
Inventory qty checks to my backend database...credit terms...
this is a massive project on any platform.
imho

> HI I met the owner of an online store. They currently use Yahoo as their
store hoster. She said that they would like to switch to inhouse but think
it would cost 250K. They have about 15,000 items and are doing about 3000
orders a week. They are experiencing increased growth. They have an
affiliate program no online customer service. Many orders have to be faxed
in anyway because they may have an 'as is' status and have to have a
signature. I just want to know if an AS/400 and which one could be their
hardware and what software or utilities would be needed, and would the price
be much lower than 250K? I realize this is very general dimensions but I can
find out more. Obviously because I am familiar with the 400, I want to offer
that I can help facilitate the transition.
