Mike,
Answers below assume that you have a fairly modern processor and that
performance is not sucking pond water at the present time.  Most of these
things depend upon too many circumstances to give a clear answer.  If you
have performance problems, then odds are that a single variable is the
limiting factor.  It might be one of these things, it might be something
else.
