Jon, another thought - doesn't XML use tags of some sort, it'd be interesting to see if there's a close enough mapping to UIM tags. Then the 5250 data stream is taken care of - layout is automatic and consistent, to some degree.

I think I'll have to abandon this thread since I'm apparently incapable of
describing what I'm after!

I did not say that DDS couldn't do it Trevor - I think I said I don't _want_
to use it because of the other baggage that goes along with it.  I could
create a separate display file for each customer  but RPG ties the display
file to the program and that forces me to have a separate display driver for
each customer.  I could use C I/O facilities to avoid the one file one
program tie - but I'm trying to avoid it.  Since XML can be mapped to
browsers, PDAs, phones, etc.  I was hoping I could use that as the mechanism
and generate 5250 datastream from the same source.
