at first I thought that we all could switch to german now,
since the talking about "Schadenfreude" ... ;-)

But seriously:
Did you have a look at the file attributes in your Excel directory ?
Any files flagged read only ?
(Search the obvious ...)
I had a user copying files from a CD-ROM a service guy gave
him and all files were of course read-only from there ..
this caused no end of strange errors for that application.
