The release of the OS is more important for this. Recent releases have SSL,
which clients like Arpeggio should be able to use - certainly IBM's Client
Access can.

Are you at a command line on the 400? Try

dspdtaara qss1mri

The version-release-modification will be in the first 6 positions, as VxRxMx

Others know more of the details.

Hello, list!

I'm pretty new to AS/400 systems in general. I've been able to pick up a
bit from this list already, though.

After searching the archives, I've either found what seemed to be dated
information, or just an overwhelming amount, not really hitting the mark.
Here's what I'm after:

- Remote access over the Internet for a few people using Walldata's Arpeggio
product (part of Rumba).

- Security implications of doing so.

While I haven't sat and used a network sniffer on a session, I'm guessing
access over tcp/ip would all be sent in the clear, right?

Anyone else doing this? Right now, a VPN for the remote user is just not in
the cards. I also do not think the AS/400 in question has a modem attached
(although, that's not out of the question, just impractical for several
people needing access at once).

The AS/400 in question is labeled 'AS/400e' on the front panel...other than
that, I'm not sure of the model number.

Thanks for any thoughts, comments or outright solutions!
