John,

I have done this upgrade personally and it was not difficult. If you are
reasonably mechanically inclined the physical part is easy. A pair of metal
strips are provided to connect the 7101 to the base 170. Electronically the
only connection between the two halves (as I recall) are a) a large ribbon
cable that pokes through a hole and connects from the back plane of the 7101
to the MFIOP and b) a SCSI cable that goes to the middle port of your DASD
controller. There is a separate power supply in the 7101 that runs that half
of the machine. You also get new covers since the unit is twice as wide now
but if you can't figure those out, then you shouldn't have read this far ;-)

  Hope this helps!

Folks,

Can anyone point me in the direction of an installation manual that can
guide me through the process of adding a System Expansion Unit (FC 7101) to
an existing 9406-170?
