We used to experience this once in a while (unattended IPL over the
weekend) while on V4R5-- say 1 out of every 10 or 12 IPLs. We went to
V5R1 on a 730 and it picked up to one out of every 3 or 4 times; once
we upgraded to an 830 and at the same time put in gigabyte ethernet, it
became almost every time. Working with IBM Support, changed lots of
different things but the most effective seems to have been staggering
the activation of the ethernet lines using the "vary on wait" knob
instead of allowing them all (4) to try to activate immediately during
the IPL process.

We seem to be back to the once every couple of months or so, guess I may
have to look closer at the other aspect (multiple interfaces and
binding).
