Scott K. pointed out the reason why this worked - I couldn't tell why when

Not strictly true. OS/400 will create the savefile for you (if it doesn't
exist) *if* you 'put' the savefile to 'myfile.savf' instead of
'myfile.file', and don't bother with a member name. Saves a bit of
typing, at least ;)
