Kevin,

"all temporarily applied PTF's have to be permanently applied" is a
recommendation, not a "THOU SHALT DO".  There are program products I would
never recommend applying any of their PTF's permanently.  Namely, any
Lotus software:  Domino, Quickplace, Sametime, LEI, etc.  With their
disparate releases you sometimes have to remove and reapply ptf's to one
product after upgrading the other.  Therefore I never run the
APYPTF LICPGM(*ALL) APY(*PERM)
command.  I do run it for individual program products, like microcode,
SS1, etc.

V4R5 is so old that I cannot recall if there are any "preparation" ptf's.
I believe that there were to upgrade to V5.

After installing V4R5 install the following PTF's:
- Latest cume
- Latest hiper group ptf
- Latest Database group ptf
- Any other group ptf listed below that pertains to you:

I have a multipage document that I use everytime I upgrade a system, (and
I've done several).  And it is written so that someone else here can do
the upgrade even if I am out of town.  Which I've been.

I have to ask.  Why V4R5?  The end of service on that is next month.

Hopefully it is because "I can't go directly to V5R2, but V4R5 will.".  If
that is the case, which I hope it is, then don't be surprised if another
of your weekends will be shortly filled.

I hope your upgrade to V4R5 goes smoothly.  IBM stopped supporting the
upgrade from V4R4 to V4R5 back in July.

I have been given the dubious honour of upgrading our machines (a 170 and
a
720) from V4R4 to V4R5.
My boss tells me that heard (although not from a reliable source) that
this
upgrade can be tricky.

Having never done an upgrade before I am starting by reading the entire
V4R5
Installation Guide, which I hope will tell me everything I need to know.
However, if anyone has done this upgrade and knows of any pitfalls,
problems, prerequisites etc. I'd love to hear about them.

A few questions have occurred to me, so far. I will probably find the
answers as I work my way through the manual but I'll throw the questions
out
here anyway, just in case anyone has the answers off-hand.

1. I am told that neither of our machines is partitioned, but I want to
confirm this. Never having had to do this I have no idea what command to
use. If there were partitions, would WRKSYSSTS or WRKLICINF tell me?

2. I know that all temporarily applied PTF's have to be permanently
applied
prior to upgrade, but is there any specific level of PTF that must be
applied prior to the upgrade. This question is difficult to put into the
correct words. Basically, I'm upgrading from V4R4 to V4R5, so do I need
all
PTF's relating to V4R4 to be applied prior to upgrading to V4R5? Or can I
just apply all PTF's from the most recent V4R5 Cumulative package after
I've
upgraded?
