... a yearning for a return to the simple life ?

That sounds like a rather Luddite attitude for someone who earns their crust
in the computer industry.

I concur that it is sometimes unnerving using features that I don't properly
understand, however, I fly in passenger jets without worrying, yet I am not
a pilot or plane manufacturer; I am passingly familiar with the fundamental
principles of flight, and that is enough to allay any fears I might have
had.

Relax Leif, go with the flow ...

This post from Vern struck me. It latches on to
a lament from Joe Pluta about how so much happens
somehow without anybody really knowing what is going
on.

Knowledge of how our systems and tools work
are IMNSHO fundamental to our work. We should
do things because we know precisely why and how,
and not because we believe or somebody said
"try this, it might work".

A counterargument might be that "our systems have
become so complex that it is impossible to know
how they work", but that is exactly the problem.

We should refuse to use complex things, we should
strive for simplification in everything.
