Hi Bill,
Thanks for the reply.
Well as I said I am very new to Synon, so did not have any idea about Synon
generating the RPGLE code.
"We have a task on hand for which we need to
change the external functions generated by Synon accordingly. By
generating the Synon code (Action Diagrams), we are trying to modify
the
RPG programs."

Bill I was trying to say that, we have to change a lot of things in the
Synon generated code.
Bill can you please give an useful link from where Synon materials can be
downloaded or can you share if you have any of them.
Thanks.

regards
Srinath

        Ken,

I am pretty sure that the official recommendation is to secure this
with an
        exit point program.

Our external auditors considered it a loophole that could be
exploited by
        business users.

In general you should not mess with these, I do not know what is in
all of
them but QBKBOOKS would contain books and QSECOFR is related to
security.

Not being a wise crack answer, there is a book called the AS400
Owners
Manual by Mike Dawson that has a good introduction to the AS/400.
Otherwise
        the Info Center
http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/iseries/v5r1/ic2924/index.htm
has a wealth of information, you will need to pick your os version.

I don't know if anyone has been noticing, but lately the MSN server
is often
down or at least their applications are failing. Many of their
headlines
point to a secondary server, go.msn.com, which has regularly been
returning
        "Page Unavailable".

This is intermittent, and is often cleared up quickly, but it sure
points to
a serious problem in either application control of server bandwidth.
go.msn.com is running IIS 5.0 on Windows 2000.

I find it kind of interesting that according to Netcraft not even
Microsoft
is running servers on Windows XP. Most of their servers run Windows
2000,
with a smattering of .NET, NT and Linux, as well as a few odd ones,
such as
Irix and Cougar. The non-2000 sites are primarily reserved
addresses:
addresses that aren't really in service, but that somebody locked in
anyway.

        Michael,

I would expect the results you have received; the serial number is
linked to the hardware platform and will not change.

If you have left your system names at the assigned defaults, the
system
name of your primary partition will be Sxxxxxxx (where xxxxxxx is
the
serial number). Secondary partitions will be assigned values from
Axxxxxxx through Zxxxxxxx. You can get these values using the
RTVNETA
command with the SYSNAME parameter. You can also change the system
name
using the CHGNETA command, but regardless, they can provide a unique
        identifier for the partition.

        Regards,
        Andy Nolen-Parkhouse

        Hello, Michael:

Although the RTVSYSVAL QSRLNBR does not tell you
the "unique" partition, you can use the following technique:

The MI instruction MATMATR has an option (X'01E0') to
retrieve partition information, which includes the following:

"Current partition identifier" is the unique identifier of the
current partition on the physical machine. This field is
materialized as a binary value. Note: If a partition is deleted,
the partition identifier of any existing partition that is active
        or defined does not change.

"Primary partition identifier" is the identifier of the primary
partition. This field is materialized as a binary value.

"Logical serial number" provides a unique machine identifier
        for the current partition.

        etc.

You can either access MATMATR as a "built-in" function from
any ILE language (RPG-IV, COBOL or C), or you can write a
small MI routine and call this OPM *PGM from your existing
RPG/400 or other OPM applications, to retrieve this info.

See the MI Functions Reference manual for V5R1 on-line at:

http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/iseries/v5r1/ic2924/tstudio/tech_ref/mi/

        I hope that helps...

        Regards,

        Mark S. Waterbury

        Hi,

We are working on shifting the Synon code to RPGLE.
There have been numerous changes to the database (PF) like
increment/
decrement of the length of the fields and addition/ deletion of
certain
        fields.
We have a task on hand for which we need to change the external
functions
        generated by Synon accordingly.
By generating the Synon code (Action Diagrams), we are trying to
modify the
        RPG programs.
But we feel that sometimes we are missing or overdoing certain
things.
What we felt was that, if we can modify the PF in Synon (by adding
new
fields or increasing/decreasing the length) and by modifying the
Synon code
accordingly our task should become much simpler and efficient.
But we have no hands on experience on Synon, we are right now doing
some R&D
and finding out some methods to go about the same.
Can you please show us a way to go about this. If you can give us
some link
where we could get useful information on the same it will be very
helpful.

Please kindly give your comments on the same or any other better
approach.
        Thanks and regards.

        regards
        Srinath

        Shrinath,

A couple of comments and a couple of questions:

You're moving from Synon to RPGLE - Did you know that Synon at
release 7 or
higher can (optionally) generate RPGLE? Why recode by hand when the
Action
        Diagram can be your friend?

Whether you are coding RPGLE yourself or using Synon, whenever you
change
keys, increase/decrease field sizes, etc. you have rework to do.
While it
is certainly easier in Synon to make these changes and to revisit
the
affected functions, rework is still needed in most cases.

What do you mean when you say "We have a task on hand for which we
need to
change the external functions generated by Synon accordingly. By
generating the Synon code (Action Diagrams), we are trying to modify
the
        RPG programs." I don't udnerstand.

        Hello all

I am having a problem with an IBM 4232 attached through a JetDirect
card as
        a remote printer.
It prints my spool files fine, and the files go to a SAV status just
like
they are supposed to. But after the file is printed the "Processing"
light
on the printer continues to flash until the printer is reset by
turning it
off and on again or by pressing the button sequence Stop - Cancel
Print -
Start. This printer is used for printing our Pack Lists so we have
several 1
to 2 page spool files printing off constantly throughout the day,
which
makes it a real pain in the neck having to reset the printer between
each
        file.

Just to make sure it wasn't something specific to the Pack List
print file
I've tried printing other spool files as well with the same results.

Does anyone have any ideas what the problem could be?

        I do have a couple of questions before offering opinions;
What release of the OS are you on?
Do you do network printing to this printer also (IE:windoz)
How is the JetDirect card configured (if you have one that is
configurable)

A quick explanation is it sounds like the AS/400 is "keeping" the
printer
after the job is complete; which reverts back to timeout amounts
being too
        high,
this is only speaking from experience with configurable jetdirect
cards,
and with HP or Lexmark printers; but ours had time out issues on
both
the AS/400 and the NT network.

As another side note (my age is showing again - I forget which
release -
        v4r5
I think) you can now set-up your IP printer as a device, and gain
more
control than using a remote outq (natively speaking)
