If you are talking about reading a 2GB QIC tape on a 4GB QIC drive, yes...

However, if you create a tape using the 4GB QIC on a 2GB formatted tape, you
are supposed to be able to read it on the 2GB QIC drive, but it doesn't
always work properly...
