About tools---

Dare I say it, Rob, I think that the WebSphere Development Studio Client
(WDSC) offers a lot of potential for a project like this. Very graphical
development environment - just make sure you have the horsepower. Java,
Cross-platform project organization (to some extent), version control, J2EE
compatibility, built-in WebSphere Application Server test environment (did
I say have lots of horsepower?) You could include a VB app in it and fire
up VB from it. Or Delphi. Database development tools. SQL stuff. Web page
designer. Customizable. Colored keywords Multiple languages (CL, C/C++,
RPG, COBOL).

BTW, I believe C++ is fully object-oriented, even on the iSeries.

And the SCM companies Rob mentioned are working with it directly. Cool!

Part of the iSeries extensions fairly easily enable running iSeries apps
from WAS.

Do I sound like Dean Henkel yet? (I was at a class on this a couple weeks
ago, Dean was the emcee), with a number of other partners. I was very
impressed with things.

Howdy folks... I'm new to the group, fresh from the HP e3000 (15 years as a
vendor).

What makes sense to me is to use a product such as PERCobol
(www.legacyj.com) that maintains your existing COBOL programs and staff, but
takes advantage of the J2EE architecture and Java. You can also call Java
from COBOL and COBOL from Java. It is platform neutral so it can run
anywhere. It's GUI, IDE is also based on the Eclipse technology.

I used it to migrate some existing HP COBOL programs from the HP e3000 to an
HP9000, under a J2EE environment and it worked great.

Glad to be part of the group!
