Yes. I'd strongly recommend this approach. Plug the cable modem into the
firewall, then everything else into the firewall's internal port. If you
still need the router (because, for example, it's your cable modem as well),
just have it send everything to the firewall.

I use IPCop, a freely available Linux-based firewall with simple
installation and a web administration interface. You can find it at
http://ipcop.sourceforge.net . It allows putting everything behind the
firewall and opening holes through it to different hosts, with port
forwarding for TCP and UDP. You could have port 21 go to your PC and port 23
go to your AS/400, if you like, very simply. You can even have port 2300 go
to port 23 on your AS/400 if you like.
