I have many programs that were written on V3R2 that do CHGVAR commands
to convert from *DEC to *CHAR.  They all work perfectly fine on new
releases of OS/400.

Can you please show us the exact line of code that's having the problem,
and also show us the variable definitions for the variables that are
used in that line of code?   Maybe once we've seen it, someone will have
an idea.
